The 915 Five features El Paso’s musicians and artists answering the same five questions. Each installment offers a stripped-down look at the people shaping the 915’s cultural landscape, in their own words. This week, we’re lucky to introduce you to the chill swagger of Krunchies, a garage rock power trio channeling the glam rock spirit with what they call “border-style biker rock.” However you label it, just know this: you’re in for a good time.
Band/Artist Name: Krunchies
Line-up: Carlitos – Bass & Vox; Ernie – Guitar & Vox; Wally – Drums & Good Looks
Formed: Krunchies was formed in 2023 and consists of musicians who have each made their mark on the El Paso music scene and have toured extensively. 1. What high school did you go to?
Members went to different high schools in El Paso (West & East).
2. What’s your favorite local venue to play — and why?
Every venue has its own charm and we are fortunate to have great friends who invite Krunchies to perform. Whenever we are invited to play in Juarez, we know we’re in for a great time. The audience there always joins in, dancing and enjoying the garage rock and roll. A special shoutout to Fayuka!
3. If you had to describe your sound without using a genre label, what would you say?
Fun and straightforward garage rock music that reflects various eras of classic rock and roll, particularly from the 1960s and 1970s.
4. What do you do when the song isn’t coming — push through, scrap it or something else?
Typically, rehearsals provide us with an opportunity to hang out and enjoy developing songs together. Either Carlitos or Ernie brings a part of a song or sometimes a full song, and we all jam out to it, watching it grow into a complete piece. The final result often turns out to be unexpected compared to the original components of a riff. We genuinely enjoy playing and writing music together and we hope the songs showcase that camaraderie.
5. If someone is seeing you live for the first time, what should they expect?
A good time amongst friends.
