On a random night in 2024, I walked into Mona Bar of Modern Art with no plan and no entourage, just a restless need to hear something loud and live. In the dim glow of downtown El Paso, one band that was on the bill in particular snapped everything into focus. La Discordia took the stage and didn’t just play — they detonated. By the time their set ended, I was already pulling out my phone, needing to know more.

The stylish quartet — Jose Perez Castaneda (guitar/vocals), Luis Trejo (keyboard/vocals), Pato Delfin (bass/vocals) and Salvador Rodriguez (drums/vocals) — has only been together since 2024. But there’s a lived-in chemistry to their sound, the kind of tightness most bands spend years chasing. Punk urgency collides with psych rock textures and every member contributes vocally, giving their songs a layered, almost communal intensity.

That immediacy is front and center on “Ya No Puedo Mas,” the band’s latest single, which they celebrated with a Feb. 17, release party at Bye Bye Dear, the venue owned by Delfin. Perez calls it one of his best songs — surprising, considering he wrote it in just five minutes. Then again, heartbreak rarely arrives polished. It spills out. The track captures that rush of feeling: raw, direct and unfiltered. It’s the kind of emotion that doesn’t need overthinking because just about everyone recognizes it.

Directed by their friend Mark Martinez, the video mirrors that stripped-down honesty. There’s no elaborate storyline; just the band locked in, performing as smoke drifts through the air and pink and red hues wash over the room. The simplicity works and keeps the focus on the tension in Perez’s voice, the pulse of the rhythm section and the atmosphere they build together.

With “Ya No Puedo Mas,” La Discordia has captured a spark that feels ready to spread.
