Tony Jupiter may have just released the single and video for “It’s Over,” but for the El Paso artist — who began performing in 2018 — this feels less like a finale and more like a beginning.
There’s power in simplicity and that’s exactly what Tony Jupiter captures in the just over two minutes of music. What’s intriguing about both the song and the video is it keeps the listener wondering: “What’s behind the mask?”
The video gives props to the genius of ’80s videos I grew up watching, immediately transporting me back to that time. It has a style and sound that’s worth being remembered. Let’s not forget about the mystery behind the face paint that some of the band members wear. It’s something we’ve seen before with other bands, yet there’s a freshness to the presentation, which continues to pique interest into the backstory of Tony Jupiter.
The group has described its distinct payaso persona as inspired by Chicano clown culture and the “smile now, cry later” ethos. That cultural foundation adds weight to the project’s identity. A bio characterizes Tony Jupiter as a Chicano surf-goth artist, merging dark, nostalgic textures with emotive lyrics and Latino influences. It’s a blend that feels both personal and purposeful.
Take a look at the simplicity of the lyrics: “You know that I’ve been waiting for you/I start to fall but what did I do?/Fractured ties bringing me down/Silent cries buried in sounds/Don’t you know it’s over.” Place those alongside drums, bass and guitar and what you have is a magical composition that speaks volumes.
“It’s Over” continues the evolution of Tony Jupiter as the artist continues to blur the lines of genre. That’s the genius behind it. The song itself is catchy and while one listens to the lyrics, it definitely boils down to “silent cries buried in sounds.”
It’s refreshing to witness an artist like Tony Jupiter continue to evolve and develop their own lane within music. What’s even better is Tony Jupiter is embracing its heritage and culture and placing it under a shining light. If “It’s Over” is any indication, this is only the beginning — and Tony Jupiter may very well have the last laugh.
